As someone who loves exploring hidden gems and getting away from the crowds, I’ve had the pleasure of visiting Kalimpong—a serene town tucked away in the Darjeeling Hills of West Bengal. This beautiful town, known for its lush landscapes, colonial charm, and rich cultural heritage, offers the perfect mix of relaxation, adventure, and historical significance. After spending a few days here, I can confidently say that Kalimpong is one of those destinations that offers both peace and excitement in equal measure.
In this post, I’ll share everything you need to know about Kalimpong—from its breathtaking views to the best activities, food, and places to stay. Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or an extended trip, this guide will provide you with all the insights to make your visit unforgettable.
Kalimpong is more than just another hill station—it’s a place with a soul. The town sits at an altitude of about 1,250 meters and offers sweeping views of the Himalayas and the Tista River valley. But it’s not just the views that make Kalimpong stand out; it’s also the blend of cultures, the colonial architecture, and the peaceful ambiance that make it a unique destination.
Kalimpong has managed to retain its small-town charm despite being a popular destination. Unlike the bustling streets of Darjeeling, Kalimpong offers a quieter atmosphere with much less commercial development. During my visit, I felt like I had discovered a hidden sanctuary where nature, culture, and history coexisted in perfect harmony.
From the moment I arrived in Kalimpong, I was in awe of its natural beauty. Surrounded by rolling hills, flower gardens, and snow-capped peaks, the town feels like something out of a postcard. The panoramic views of the Kangchenjunga range on one side and the lush green valleys on the other are truly breathtaking.
One of the first things I did after settling into my accommodation was head to Durpin Dara Hill. The view from this point was nothing short of spectacular. I could see the entire town of Kalimpong spread below, with Kangchenjunga towering majestically in the background. The sight of the sun setting behind the snow-capped mountains was an experience I’ll never forget.
Kalimpong is famous for its vibrant flower gardens, particularly its orchids, cacti, and poppies. A visit to the Kalimpong Cactus Nursery was a must for me, where I marveled at the wide variety of plants and flowers. The town is often referred to as the “land of flowers”, and it truly lives up to this title.
The town is surrounded by tea gardens, offering picturesque views of neatly planted rows of tea bushes stretching across the hills. I spent an afternoon visiting a tea estate, where I learned about the tea-making process and enjoyed a cup of freshly brewed Darjeeling tea while soaking in the beautiful scenery.
Kalimpong is the kind of place where you can easily lose track of time, whether you’re wandering through the streets, hiking in the hills, or simply soaking in the atmosphere. Here are some of the top activities I recommend during your visit:
Kalimpong is home to several beautiful monasteries, and I highly recommend visiting them to experience the serene and spiritual atmosphere. I spent a few quiet hours at the Zang Dhok Palri Phodang Monastery, which is known for its stunning architecture and peaceful ambiance. Another notable monastery is the Tharpa Choling Monastery, where I witnessed monks chanting prayers and offering a sense of tranquility.
If you’re an adventure lover like me, trekking in Kalimpong is a must. The region offers several trekking routes, ranging from easy nature walks to challenging mountain treks. One of the best hikes I did was to Rishop, a small village that offers magnificent views of the Kangchenjunga range and is a perfect spot for some birdwatching.
Kalimpong’s local market is a vibrant and colorful place to explore. The market offers a range of local handicrafts, including Tibetan carpets, handwoven shawls, and traditional jewelry. I picked up a few souvenirs during my visit, including Tibetan singing bowls and handmade wooden artifacts.
Kalimpong has a number of colonial-era bungalows and heritage hotels that offer a unique stay experience. I stayed at a beautiful heritage property during my visit, where I felt like I had stepped back in time. The old-world charm of the bungalow, coupled with the modern comforts, made for a delightful experience.
The best time to visit Kalimpong depends on what you’re looking for in your travel experience.
Summer (March to June): The weather during these months is pleasant, with daytime temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C. It’s perfect for outdoor activities like trekking, sightseeing, and exploring the gardens.
Monsoon (July to September): This is the off-season for Kalimpong, as the town receives heavy rainfall. While the lush greenery is beautiful during this time, it’s best to avoid the monsoon if you want to enjoy trekking or outdoor activities.
Autumn (October to November): This is one of the best times to visit Kalimpong. The weather is cool, the skies are clear, and the views are absolutely stunning. It’s ideal for sightseeing, trekking, and exploring the town’s cultural attractions.
Winter (December to February): Kalimpong experiences cold winters, with temperatures dropping as low as 2°C. If you love the winter chill and snow-capped views, this is the best time for you to visit.
Kalimpong is easily accessible, and there are several ways to reach the town:
The nearest airport is Bagdogra Airport (IXB), located about 80 kilometers from Kalimpong. From the airport, you can take a taxi or shared jeep to Kalimpong, which will take around 2.5 to 3 hours.
The nearest major railway station is New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP), located about 70 kilometers from Kalimpong. You can hire a taxi or take a shared jeep to Kalimpong, which will take about 2.5 hours.
Kalimpong is well-connected by road to Darjeeling (about 50 kilometers) and Siliguri (about 60 kilometers). If you prefer to drive, the roads are winding but manageable. Self-driving is an enjoyable way to see the stunning landscape along the way.
Kalimpong offers a variety of accommodation options, ranging from budget hotels to luxury resorts. During my stay, I chose a charming colonial-style guesthouse, which provided a cozy, home-like feel with stunning views of the Himalayas. The best part was the warm hospitality provided by the local staff, who made my stay truly special.
If you’re looking for something more luxurious, there are a few high-end resorts and boutique hotels that offer modern amenities and spectacular views.
